PVC Wall Cladding vs. FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Panel): Which Is Right for Your Project?

Many healthcare facilities specifying wall protection compare PVC wall cladding against FRP (fiberglass reinforced panel) — the traditional material for hygienic wall surfaces in commercial kitchens, hospitals and food processing facilities. While FRP has been the default specification for decades, VS Series PVC cladding offers several practical advantages for most healthcare applications:

Weight — VS Series PVC panels are significantly lighter than FRP of equivalent thickness, reducing structural loading and making installation faster with fewer installers required per panel.

Seamless hygiene performance — FRP panels typically require a gel-coat surface that can degrade and become porous over time with repeated disinfection. VS Series PVC maintains a non-porous, seamless surface throughout its service life without gel-coat degradation.

Installation speed — PVC panels install with adhesive bonding and do not require the resin curing time associated with some FRP installation methods, reducing facility downtime during renovation projects.

Chemical resistance — both materials offer good chemical resistance, but PVC's resistance to a broader range of cleaning agents (including strong chlorine-based disinfectants used in infection control protocols) makes it the more flexible specification for facilities using varied cleaning regimes.

Cost — PVC wall cladding is typically more cost-effective than FRP at equivalent thickness and performance specification, particularly for large-area healthcare renovation projects.

FRP remains a valid specification choice for certain applications, particularly where an existing facility standard specifies FRP for consistency, or where extreme mechanical impact resistance beyond VS-30's 3.0mm specification is required. For most hospital corridor, ward and clinical area applications, VS Series PVC cladding provides equivalent or superior hygiene and durability performance at a lower installed
