Hospital Wall Protection Specification Guide for Architects and Specifiers
A hospital wall protection specification written at the design stage becomes the legal and technical framework for procurement, installation, and commissioning. A well-written specification prevents substitution of non-compliant products, coordinates the interface between wall protection components, and gives the contractor clear installation requirements.
This guide is written for architects, healthcare planners, and project specifiers who are developing a wall protection specification for a hospital project. It covers the four components of a complete hospital wall protection system, the performance requirements for each, and the specification language that should appear in the project documents.

The four components of a complete hospital wall protection specification
A complete hospital corridor wall protection system consists of:
1. Handrail system — continuous wall-mounted rail providing patient mobility support and incidental wall protection
2. Wall guard system — wide-profile impact absorber at corridor mid-height, protecting against wheelchair, trolley, and bed impact
3. Corner guard system — vertical edge protector at all external corridor corners
4. Vinyl wall protection sheet (optional) — full-area wall cladding for high-intensity impact zones
All four components must be specified together and coordinated for colour, material compatibility, and installation sequencing.
Section 1: Handrail System Specification
Product description Continuous wall-mounted hospital corridor handrail, PVC-vinyl exterior with extruded aluminum alloy interior retainer, installed at a nominal gripping surface height of [900mm / 34-38 inches] above finished floor level, both sides of all patient corridors as indicated on drawings.
Material requirements
- PVC panel thickness: 2.0mm minimum
- Aluminum alloy interior retainer: 6063-T5 or equivalent
- Bracket material: ABS engineering plastic or aluminum
- Elbow fittings (inside and outside corners): PVC, to match handrail body colour
- End caps: PVC, to match handrail body colour
Performance requirements
- Surface: non-porous, antibacterial, compatible with hospital-grade disinfectants including sodium hypochlorite (bleach) at standard working concentrations
- Impact resistance: capable of withstanding repeated collision from standard hospital wheelchairs and equipment without surface deformation or bracket failure
- Grip diameter: [38mm / 40mm] (confirm with applicable accessibility standard)
- Wall clearance (centre of grip to wall surface): minimum 38mm (ADA) / 45mm (EN ISO 21542)
Compliance clause
Installation height shall comply with [ADA Section 505 / EN ISO 21542 / AS 1428.1 / BS 8300] as applicable. Contractor shall confirm compliance with the governing accessibility standard prior to installation. Deviation from the required height range shall be corrected at no additional cost to the project owner.
Colour
As specified in Finishes Schedule, or as selected from manufacturer’s standard colour range. Custom colours (Pantone/RAL reference) available subject to minimum order quantity.
Substitution
No substitution permitted without written approval from the architect. Substitutes must demonstrate equivalent performance against all stated requirements and provide test documentation on request.
Section 2: Wall Guard System Specification
Product description
Wide-profile impact wall guard, PVC-vinyl body with extruded aluminum alloy interior retainer, installed at [300–450mm] from finished floor level, as indicated on drawings.
Material requirements
- Body width: [WG-100 / WG-120 / WG-150 / WG-200] as specified in Finishes Schedule
- PVC surface: minimum 1.5mm panel thickness
- Aluminum alloy core: extruded, provides structural rigidity and mechanical fixing points
- Connectors and end caps: matching PVC
Performance requirements
- Surface: non-porous, smooth, antibacterial, cleanable with hospital-grade disinfectants
- Impact resistance: resists repeated lateral impact from wheeled hospital equipment without visible deformation of the body profile
- Fire classification: Class [A / B1] minimum as required by local building code for corridor wall materials
- Colour match: wall guards and handrails shall be from the same manufacturer and same colour batch to ensure visual consistency
Installation requirement
Wall guards shall be continuous along the full length of protected corridor sections. Gaps shall only occur at doorway openings, with proper end-cap terminations at each gap. No gaps within continuous corridor runs are permitted.
Section 3: Corner Guard System Specification
Product description
Full-height vertical corner protection profile, installed at all external corridor corners as indicated on drawings.
Material requirements
- Wing width: [25mm / 40mm / 50mm] per wing as specified
- Material: PVC (standard) / Stainless steel SUS304 (where specified for high-impact or aesthetic requirements)
- Height: full height from finished floor to [ceiling / 2400mm / as specified]
Performance requirements
- Corner guards shall be capable of withstanding repeated corner impact from hospital wheelchairs, trolleys, and patient beds without visible deformation, cracking, or separation from the wall
- Surface finish: smooth, cleanable, non-porous
- Colour: as specified in Finishes Schedule
Section 4: Vinyl Wall Protection Sheet (where specified)
Product description
Full-area vinyl wall protection cladding, installed on walls in high-impact zones as indicated on drawings.
Material requirements
- Sheet thickness: [1.0mm / 1.5mm / 2.0mm] as specified
- Material: PVC vinyl
- Adhesive: pressure-sensitive adhesive pre-applied to sheet, or contact adhesive applied on site
Performance requirements
- Impact resistance: suitable for continuous contact with hospital equipment without surface tearing or adhesive failure
- Cleanability: compatible with hospital-grade disinfectants, not affected by repeated cleaning cycles
- Fire classification: Class B1 minimum
Coordination requirements (important for the specification)
The following interfaces must be addressed in the contractor’s installation programme:
1. Handrail vs wall guard interface: Where both a handrail and a wall guard are installed on the same wall, their vertical positions must be coordinated so that they do not overlap and the combined profile creates a cleanable, continuous surface. Typically, the wall guard body sits below the handrail body, with a clearance of 20–30mm between the top of the wall guard and the bottom of the handrail body.
2. Corner guard vs wall guard interface: At corridor corners, the corner guard covers the corner edge; the wall guard terminates at the face of the corner guard. Provide an appropriate junction connector or end-cap where the wall guard meets the corner guard profile.
3. Doorway terminations: At all doorway openings, all wall protection profiles (handrail, wall guard) shall terminate with the appropriate end-cap, positioned 50mm from the face of the doorframe. Profiles shall not terminate with exposed cut ends.
4. Installation sequence: Corner guards are typically installed first. Wall guards are installed second. Handrails are installed last. This sequence allows the corner guard edges to be neatly covered by the overlapping wall guard and handrail terminations.
