Different types of hospital equipment create impact at predictable and consistent heights:

Wheelchairs: The footrest bar of a standard hospital wheelchair sits at approximately 150–200mm above floor level. The armrest is at approximately 700–750mm. Both create impact on the wall when a wheelchair moves too close. The body of the wheelchair (seat, armrests, push handles) creates a broad impact zone from approximately 150mm to 1000mm above floor.

Patient beds and gurneys: The frame height of a standard hospital bed (when at transport height) is approximately 500–600mm above floor. Bed corners hit walls when beds are navigated around corners. The highest impact point is typically the IV pole bracket at 1500–1800mm.

Food service and linen trolleys: Impact height approximately 800–1100mm (trolley body), with a lower impact zone at 300–500mm from wheel guards.

Cleaning equipment: Floor scrubbers typically create impact at 300–600mm. High-pressure cleaning nozzles can affect any height, but wall impact is concentrated at 200–500mm.

Crash rails are narrow-profile wall bumpers installed at a single height to protect against the most common impact point — typically wheelchair footrests or trolley body impact.

Standard height: 380–450mm from floor level (measured to the centre of the crash rail)

This height targets the wheelchair footrest impact zone. It is the most commonly specified single crash rail height in hospital corridors worldwide.

Secondary height (where dual crash rails are specified): 900–950mm from floor level, targeting trolley body impact.


Wide-profile wall guards (150–250mm body height)

Wide-profile wall guards (such as the Jincheng WG-150 and WG-200 series) provide a larger impact absorption zone. They are typically installed with the bottom of the profile at a standard height.

Standard installation: Bottom edge at 300mm from floor, top edge at 450–500mm from floor for a 150–200mm body height profile.

This positions the centre of the wall guard at approximately 375–400mm — in the wheelchair footrest impact zone — while the extended profile height also provides protection above and below.

For wide-profile guards in areas with combined wheelchair and trolley traffic, a higher installation position is sometimes used: bottom edge at 650mm, top edge at 850mm — targeting the trolley body impact zone.


Full-height or dado-height wall protection sheets (VS series)

Vinyl wall protection sheets provide full-area coverage rather than linear profile protection. They are installed from floor level (with a 10–20mm gap for cleaning access) to a specified height, typically 1200mm (dado height) or full wall height.

Zone-by-zone installation guide

Main patient bed-transit corridors (highest priority)

These corridors see continuous movement of patient beds, gurneys, wheelchairs, and supply trolleys. The full impact zone from floor to approximately 1000mm must be addressed.

Recommended specification: - Crash rail at 380mm height (wheelchair footrest zone) - Wide wall guard (WG-150 or WG-200) at 450mm bottom edge (overlapping or adjacent to crash rail) - Corner guards at all external corners (full height) - Handrail at 900mm (combined mobility support and wall protection)

General ward corridors (standard)

Recommended specification: - Wide wall guard (WG-150) at 300–350mm bottom edge - Handrail at 900mm - Corner guards at all external corners

Patient room doorway approaches (transition zone)

Patient room doorways are the highest-impact single point in most hospital corridors — beds must be manoeuvred through a constrained opening. Additional protection at the doorframe sides is essential.

Recommended specification: - Corner guards at the door reveal on both sides (full height of reveal) - Crash rail continues up to doorframe and terminates with end cap 50mm from frame face

Stairwells and lift lobbies

Lower impact from wheeled equipment but higher risk of personal fall impact (patient losing balance against wall). Protection focus shifts from impact absorption to surface durability and cleanability.

Recommended specification: - Wide wall guard or dado-height vinyl sheet at standard impact zone height - No crash rail required unless trolley access is expected
