How to Calculate Hospital Handrail Quantity for a Project
Ordering too little handrail means a project delay while waiting for additional stock. Ordering too much means wasted material budget. For a large hospital project with several kilometres of corridor, a 5% error in the quantity takeoff translates directly into a significant cost or delay consequence.
This guide walks through the standard method for calculating hospital handrail quantities from architectural drawings, with a worked example based on a typical hospital floor plan.

What you need before you start
Architectural floor plan at a usable scale (1:100 or 1:50 preferred)
Handrail specification (which model — e.g., HR-140, single-sided or double-sided)
Door schedule (to know all doorway widths)
Specification of which corridors require handrail (all patient corridors, selected service corridors, etc.)
Handrail standard being applied (ADA, ISO, AS, etc.) — determines whether handrail must be on one or both sides
Step 1: Identify all corridors requiring handrail
Mark on the floor plan every corridor segment that requires handrail installation. In a typical hospital, this includes: - Main patient bed-transit corridors (both sides) - Ward access corridors (typically both sides) - Stair corridors and ramp approaches (both sides, per ADA) - Outpatient department corridors serving patients with mobility limitations - Rehabilitation area corridors
Service corridors (used only by staff with equipment) may or may not require handrail — confirm with the project specification.
Step 2: Measure total corridor linear metres (one side)
Using the scaled floor plan, measure the total length of each corridor segment requiring handrail. Record each segment separately.
Example floor plan (typical 1000m² hospital ward floor): - Main north-south corridor: 45m - East wing corridor: 28m - West wing corridor: 28m - Stair approach corridor (both ends): 2 × 6m = 12m - Total one-side length: 45 + 28 + 28 + 12 = 113m
Step 3: Determine one-side or two-side installation
For hospital patient corridors, both ADA and ISO 21542 require handrail on both sides of the corridor. Multiply the one-side measurement by 2:
113m × 2 = 226m total handrail length (before subtractions)
Step 4: Subtract doorway widths
Handrail must be interrupted at doorways. For each doorway along the corridor, subtract the doorway clear width from the total handrail length.
Typical hospital doorway widths: - Standard room doorway: 1100mm (1.1m) per side - Wide doorway (equipment access): 1400mm (1.4m) per side - Double-door opening: 2000mm (2.0m) per side
In our example floor plan, counting doorways along all corridors: - 18 standard single-door openings (900mm each, so 900mm interruption per door per corridor side): 18 × 0.9m = 16.2m - 4 wide single-door openings (1100mm each): 4 × 1.1m = 4.4m - Total deduction: 20.6m (one side) × 2 = 41.2m
Handrail quantity after doorway deductions: 226m - 41.2m = 184.8m
Step 5: Add stair and ramp extensions
ADA and most international standards require the handrail to extend horizontally 300mm beyond the top and bottom of any stair or ramp. For each stair or ramp in the project:
Add 300mm at top + 300mm at bottom × 2 sides = 1.2m additional per stair
In our example with 2 stair cores: 2 × 1.2m = 2.4m additional
Running total: 184.8m + 2.4m = 187.2m
Step 6: Add waste and cutting allowance
Standard lengths for hospital handrail profiles are 3m or 4m per section (Jincheng HR series: 3m standard, custom lengths available). Each cutting joint generates a small waste offcut. Add 8–10% for cutting waste and joint matching:
187.2m × 1.10 = 205.9m → round up to 206m
Step 7: Calculate accessories separately
Accessories are calculated independently of the linear metre quantity:
End caps: 2 per interrupted run end - Each doorway creates 2 ends per side (approach side and departure side) = 4 end caps per doorway - Each corridor dead-end creates 1 end cap per side = 2 end caps - Total for our example: (22 doorways × 4) + (4 corridor dead-ends × 2) = 88 + 8 = 96 end caps - Add 10% contingency: 96 × 1.1 = 106 end caps → order 110 (nearest 10)
Inside corner elbows (90°): 1 per inside corner × 2 sides - Count all inside corridor corners: 8 corners in example → 8 × 2 = 16 inside elbows
Outside corner elbows (90°): Same method - Count all outside corridor corners: 4 corners → 4 × 2 = 8 outside elbows
Wall brackets: Brackets are spaced at 600–800mm centres (confirm with specification) - At 700mm average spacing: 206m ÷ 0.7m = 295 brackets - Add 10%: 295 × 1.1 = 325 brackets

Common quantity calculation mistakes
Forgetting double-sided installation: The most common error. Always confirm whether the specification requires one-side or two-side installation before calculating.
Not deducting doorway widths: On a corridor with many doors, the total doorway deduction can be 15–20% of the gross measurement.
Underestimating accessories:Accessories (end caps, elbows, brackets) are frequently underquoted. The accessory cost can represent 20–30% of total project value.
Using nominal corridor length instead of wall-face length: On drawings, corridors are typically dimensioned to grid lines or centrelines. The handrail installs on the wall face — which may be 100–200mm inside the grid line due to wall thickness. Measure wall-face to wall-face for accuracy.
